MEAK

MEAK forms an integral part of TUFM's dedication to charitable causes. There is no National Health Service in Kenya, and this is why MEAK is such an important organisation, helping to improve the lives of many who cannot afford the healthcare that they so desperately need.

MEAK has set up a paediatric cardiac programme at Kenyatta National Hospital, to provide heart surgery that the Hospital's budget has proved too low to manage. Resources from the UK and the US have provided the financial and clinical expertise to offer life-saving surgery to around two dozen children per visit. Figures from 2009 stand at the impressive number of 685 procedures completed. This figure includes orthopaedic, heart and eye surgery.

MEAK additionally offers the opportunity for British medical students to spend some working alongside the clinical team. This once in a lifetime learning opportunity for them, is also a massive help to the team.

MEAK realises that more needs to be done. It has a strong dedication to its projects in Kenya, and hopes to expand them to offer help to even more children suffering from unresolved congenital and rheumatic heart disease.

MEAK does not only focus its attention on healthcare. MEAK opened its first school, Ilmoitiok Primary School in Loita near the Maasai Mara, in December 2009. 185 children, who previously did not have access to an education, have started school. This project, with MEAK's help, is being sustained by the local community. MEAK has aspirations for further future projects. With your help, MEAK will be able to continue its aid to Kenya, and improve the lives of those suffering due to poverty and the misfortunes that come with it.
